Having spent good chunks of my life studying and working in engineering before making the leap to writing, I was interested in other writers who had made similar transitions. There are quite a few, including Homer Hickam of Rocket Boys, sci fi master Gene Wolfe, literary master Stewart O'Nan, McArthur Awardee George Saunders and others. I wrote about these contemporaries and engineer-writers from the past such as Thoreau, Dostoevsky, Nevil Shute and Eric Ambler for an E-book published in 2010 by IEEE-USA, the American arm of what bills itself as world's largest technical professional organization.
I also wrote a four volume E-book series for IEEE on best practices in professional writing for engineers. These was based on courses I had been teaching at Rochester Institute of Technology with two volumes published in 2011 and the remaining two in 2012.
